Letterboxing, Stamp Edition

Last year, I read about an activity called letterboxing. It is essentially a treasure hike! How it works is you have clues to find a box hidden somewhere, usually around trails and walking areas. In that box, you will find a book and a stamp. Once you find it, you stamp your book with the box's stamp, and stamp the box's book with your stamp. You also put the date so the owner will know when you were there. It sounds like lots of fun, and something the girls will love.

Part of the fun of letterboxing is to make your own personalized stamp. It can be as simple as a letter or as elaborate as you want. Everything I've read about it says that a homemade stamp is the best. So, I went to Michael's eons ago and found the Speedball set complete with tools, a guide, tracing paper, and the pad to carve. It sat forever while winter blew on and procrastinator Michelle didn't touch it. Well, I finally got out the supplies last night and made our stamp:

First I decided on a design. I wanted something that had our name or our initials in it. I tried to find a dog bone, but there was not one I liked. So I used the house. After I printed it, I put it face down on the stamp block, about 1/4 of an inch from the side. I held on to it tight and rubbed the fire out of it! When I was done, the ink had transferred to the stamp block.

Then I began to carve. It took me a minute to figure out how I wanted it to look--just like my print, or the opposite. I wanted it to look just like my pattern, but that was way too difficult! I messed one up figuring this part out. Lucky for me the stamp block was a decent size! I started over again and had a good idea exactly how to do it this time. I decided to just carve out the "L" and the initials and let the rest be colored.

From there I tested it out. Not bad for my first go at it! I went back with my tools and did some trimming and detailing to make it look alright. It was surprisingly easy. I thought it would be much harder than it was. Now we have a stamp to use to go letterboxing! I think we are planning to go next week, and I will tell you all about it!

It's me, Penny

I've taken over the computer once again to share my day with you. I have been very feisty lately. I want to tell everyone who is boss, and want to play ball a lot! The big guy that lives in my house (I think his name is Allen or Daddy or something) has been teasing me with that ball. I love it, and I like to play growl at him! I sound like an Ewok when I'm playing. Well, today we were playing with my pink ball and the blue ball. Anna was throwing it down from upstairs and I was chasing it. The big guy decided to play and threw the ball. It was great fun until this happened...

Well, it didn't hurt, but I did have to sit for a second. My people thought it was wildly funny, and I'm glad that I'm entertainment! OK. I'm tired. I'm going to go now and burrow my way in somewhere cozy and snore until morning. Good night!

The Pocketmod

OK. Most of you know how I am with my planner/calendar. Well, if you don't, let me give you a quick explanation. I AM ADDICTED TO IT!! Especially this time of year at school, I use my calendar/planner a lot. And, I have a few different ones too. I have a pocket PC, a 1/2 sheet of paper size, and then I have a quarter-sheet size spiral one. At one point I've used a full-size calendar too. That one was too big. Anyway, I teeter back and forth of what will work for me, so I have different ones. Right now I'm using the quarter-sheet-size one, but I'm still not sure for how long--we'll see. The electronic one has been calling my name! Now that I've given you a glimpse into my planner craziness, I must tell you about the Pocketmod. I was reading FamilyFun magazine (if you have kids, it's a great resource) and they were talking about getting organized. They had a little thing about this website and I went to play with it. It is way cool! It's free! Out of one sheet of paper you can make a little book. You pick what you put on there, from a calendar, to tic-tac-toe, a to-do list, to even music staff! It is just right up my alley. I made one full of games and drawing paper for the girls. They will love it! Allen is just shaking his head at my silliness. Check it out! pocketmod.com
